Little Love Notes Printable

Friday, February 22

For Valentine's Day, I hid 14 little love notes around the house for Danny to find. Hiding notes for people to find has always been one of my favorite things to do - when I was little I'd make a package with a note in it for my parent's birthdays; in high school if I ever saw a friend's car around town, I would write a quick note and stick it on their windshield; and when Danny and I were dating, I'd leave a good luck note in his driver's seat whenever he had an exam.

I think love notes should be given year-round, so I drew up this little freebie printable for you to use. Click HERE to download and print, then cut out according to the crop marks. Enjoy!

DIY Picture Frame Makeover

Wednesday, February 20

I found this little gem at Target for $1.25. I also picked up two other larger frames ($3 and $4) and a discounted pack of pretty dish towels. Man do I love those clearance aisles.

This little brown frame was cute, but it really wasn't doing it for me. Some painter's tape, a gold sharpie, and an episode of Castle later and I had a pretty new picture frame!

This frame was super easy to make. All you have to do is cut rectangles out of painters tape and place them however you'd like on the frame. I used a gold sharpie to color in the uncovered spots, but after I'd peeled off the tape I had to go over a few edges. I would have used spray paint if I'd had any on hand; I didn't want to buy an entire can just for this little frame.

After touching up a few areas I sprayed it with a clear protective coat to help with any scratching. And voila! New picture frame ready to go.

This photo and my profile photo in the sidebar were taken by the lovely Valerie of Maeling Photography. If you're ever looking for a photographer in the Bay Area, we're big fans of her work!

Apple Cider Pancakes

Monday, February 18

Picture this: It's ten o' clock at night. Danny and I are usually in bed by this time. We like to go to bed early because: (A) We get up early and like our sleep and (B) If I don't go to bed on time, I get the worst case of late night munchies imaginable. Seriously - around 9pm I'm starving. If I make it to bed by 10, I'm fine. But that night, I didn't. And I had the strongest craving for pancakes. So we made pancakes. And made them again the next day. And the next...

So I'm here to share my Mom's delicious apple pancake recipe that I love oh so much. It, in fact, is the same apple pancake recipe referenced in our love story. It's the first thing I ever cooked up for Danny. They are just so-good. *Scroll below for the full recipe sans pictures.

First things first, you'll need your batter. We have a huge bag of Krusteaz from Costco - it's lasted us forever and it makes delicious, fluffy, buttery pancakes. You can use pre-made batter, too, or make it from scratch.

Take a ripe apple (use your favorite variety) and a potato peeler. Peel off the skin, then peel thin slices of apple right into the batter and mix in. The more apple you use, the more apple-y your pancakes will taste. I like a lot of apple, Danny likes a little bit, so we compromised and went in the middle.

The best part of this recipe is the apple cider syrup. This version yields 2 1/2 cups. You can use it all or freeze the rest for later!

Ingredients:
1 cup of sugar
2 Tbsp cornstarch
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2 cups apple cider
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1/4 stick of butter (2 Tbsp)

Mix together the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a pot.

Stir in the apple cider and lemon juice (I had some just-add-water apple cider drink mix on hand - normally I'd use a jug of it instead) and put on medium-high heat. Stir continuously until mixture begins to boil.

Let mixture boil for 1 minute, stirring the entire time.

Remove from heat, add 1/4 stick of butter (2 Tbsp) and stir until melted.

And that's it!! Drizzle that delicious syrup over your pancakes and bask in the deliciousness. It tastes like apples and cider and cinnamon and pure, amazing, yumminess.

I like to smother my pancakes in syrup, as can be seen below. Danny likes a light splash, along with some whipped cream.

Two and a half cups is way more than Danny and I can eat in one go. We either bottle up the extra and gift it to friends/neighbors, or we freeze the rest and pull it out when we're craving more pancakes!

So whip up some apple pancakes with apple cider syrup and enjoy the goodness!

APPLE CIDER PANCAKES

Ingredients:
Pancake batter
One apple (variety of your choice)
1 cup of sugar
2 Tbsp cornstarch
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2 cups apple cider
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1/4 stick of butter (2 Tbsp)

Directions:
Pancakes
Prepare pancake batter according to package directions. Use a potato peeler to peel the skin off of the apple, then "peel" apple slices into the batter. Mix together. Cook pancakes as normal.

Syrup
1. Mix together sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add apple cider and lemon juice and place over medium-high heat.
2. Stir mixture until it boils. Boil for 1 minute, stirring the whole time.

Paperman

Thursday, February 14

What's posting twice in one day, right?

I'm such a sucker for a fun video. This one is adorably cute and perfect for February 14. It's Disney's "Paperman," and it's been nominated for Best Animated Short at the Oscars.

And just because, here's another favorite of mine. Also perfect for this little day of love.

New Look

Wednesday, February 13

Hi friends! I've been a little MIA this past week - I haven't posted since last Wednesday. I've been spending all of my time getting everything installed, put together, and organized for my new blog layout!

With the help of Kathy at Nudge Media Design, I have this lovely new blog look up and I am so - excited! I couldn't be happier with the way it came together. Kathy is amazing and helped me with all of my (many) questions as I was trying to find the perfect design. I'm quite smitten with everything in her shop.

While I've been getting everything up, I went through and organized my archives and added a few new features. Up top on the navigation bar, you can find my new DIY/CRAFTS page (which will be kept up-to-date) as new projects are added. Just click on any picture and it will take you to the original post!

And just to the side of that, I've included a RECIPES page which will also be kept up-to-date as new recipes are posted:

I've also added a LOVE STORY tab. Who doesn't love a great love story? I'm quite fond of ours :)

And last but not least, over on the top right hand side, you'll find a new social media icon for my recently created Facebook page! I'll be sharing post updates over there as well as on Google +.

And that's about it! I hope you love the new layout as much as I do. Feel free to browse around and check out the new digs!

Valentine's Day Entry Table

Wednesday, February 6

I have finally found a mirror that works with our entryway table!! I've been fussing over this space since we moved in last year. Eventually I'd like something a bit more colorful and unique up there, but for now I'm satisfied with the way it looks.

My favorite part is that I can decorate it for holidays! I'd always imagined having a mirror with a cute little bunting hanging across it. As soon as we got that baby on wall, I grabbed my Valentine's Day bunting from the mantel and hung it up. I loved it so much that I decided to add a few more holiday decorations to the space.

The first thing I did was put up these cute little accordion circles. I used brown kraft paper I had lying around, scrapbook paper I had left over from the bunting, and some red glitter foam left over from last year's Halloween costume.

The mini hearts picture frame was inspired by this picture from The Idea Room. The chalkboard love print is from U-create. I love the chalkboard print (although I printed it out a little too big - I need to scale it down to better fit the frame), but I found this print from Tried and True and I'm kind-of obsessed with it. I might end up switching the two out. And bonus: it's a coloring page printable, so I can even add my own colors to it.

I made the mini hearts picture frame with leftover scrapbook paper from the bunting. The little hearts are just held on with a tiny dab of Elmer's Glue. The paper itself isn't actually secure in the frame - it's sitting completely loose. I really like the picture underneath it and plan on keeping it. So I measured and cut the scrapbook paper to fit right into the frame. That way I can change it out once Valentine's Day is over with or just use it as is.

Believe it or not, but I cut out all of those little mini hearts by hand! Luckily it didn't take very long, and I ended up with these fun strips of heart shaped cut-outs. They were so pretty that I decided to wrap them around the candle. I think it adds the perfect little romantic touch.

The vases are from Ikea. They were originally in our bedroom on a dresser. I brought them down and stuck some pretty pink flowers (that were sitting in another vase) to add a finishing touch to this subtle Valentine's day look.

I'm kind-of smitten with it. I can't wait to decorate it for other holidays! I'll probably have something small up for St. Patrick's Day. I'm not huge into St. Patty's, but I married into a very Irish last name (although most of my husband's ancestors are German). My mother-in-law goes all out for the holiday - I'll have to put something up for her.

Favorite Valentine's Day Cards from Etsy

Tuesday, February 5

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7 // 8

I love paper goods. Cards are no exception. In fact, part of me someday dreams that I'll open up my own little stationary shop. I'd have holiday cards, and notebooks, and wedding invitations, and birth announcements, personalized labels, thank you cards, etc. As much as I love technology, I have a special fondness for paper and pen. So, in recognition of my love of all things stationary and paper, here are a few of my favorite Valentine's Day cards from Etsy. I think #5 is my favorite, but I just might have to buy #3 for Danny. We're kind-of zombie nerds around here.

ps: Have you heard about the new zombie movie with Brad Pitt? He's one of Danny's favorite actors (I like to call him Danny's "man-crush"). It's coming out in June - 3 days before our four-year anniversary. Luckily, it's my turn for our anniversary this year. Don't get me wrong - I love zombies just as much as the next girl (minimal to entertaining, depending on the level of grossness). But zombies and guts right after a dinner date just doesn't scream romantic to me. A cute little zombie with an "I love your guts" card, though? Totally doable for Valentine's Day.

Free Valentine's Day Chalkboard Printables

Monday, February 4

Remember this gift I got in the mail a few weeks ago? I'm not going to lie - it's intimidating trying to figure how to work everything in there. For the past few years I've been using GIMP (a free alternative to Photoshop), but I never really learned how to use it properly. This time around, I'm really trying to buckle down and learn the ins and outs of Photoshop. It's slow going, but really a lot of fun. This weekend, I actually sat down and figured out how to do a project I've had on my list for a while now - chalkboard printables! And in since Valentine's Day is just right around the corner, how about some free love related quotes for you to print off at home?

The first is from good ol' Hamlet, and the second is probably one of my favorite quotes of all time. Seriously - I absolutely love how simple yet breaktakingly beautiful it sounds (I'm a pretty big sucker for quotes that just seem to speak to you).

These printables are FREE. Right click on each image, save it to your computer, then open the file to print. You can size it/scale it down however you want (it's currently scaled for an 8x10 inch print).

And to give credit where credit is due:
I used this tutorial from How to Nest for Less to download the chalkboard background.
The ornamental swirls are from coydreamer/brusheezy.com.
The clock hands are from The Graphics Fairy.

Valentine's Day Bunting

Friday, February 1

Okay, guys. I am sold on buntings. My friend, Allie, is a seriously awesome crafter. And she makes the cutest buntings. She made a gorgeous one for Christmas, and she has a darling one abover her baby boy's crib. So when she suggested we do a Valentine's Day bunting, I was so excited!

And before we move on - remember when I talked about Allie here and here? She just started a blog! Go check her out over at Curlie Days! Girl's got awesome fashion and amazing talent. Seriously, this project was all her.

The inspiration for our bunting was this gorgeous one from Rebecca over at Simple As That.

The bunting itself was pretty simple to make, so we grabbed our materials and got to work! It was such a fun craft, and it makes for a super fun girl's day.

For my flag, I tore out pages from Sense and Sensibility. I'd picked it up at Target last year for $1. I'm ashamed to say I haven't even read the whole thing (I know, I know. I thought I'd read it back in high school, but come to find out, I actually hadn't). It's such a classic; I mean, come on - Jane Austen's first published novel! Sigh. I've read enough, though, to know that the pages would be a perfect backdrop for a little romantic bunting. I just had to make sure that I tore out pages I'd already read.

Allie had the brilliant idea to distress our pages. Didn't they turn out gorgeous? I love the way it antiqued them. Allie let me borrow her camera and I snapped away at the loveliness of it all.

Here's Allie's finished bunting on her Valentine's Day shelf! I'm telling ya - the girl knows how to decorate for the holidays.

And here's my finished product hanging up on our mantel! I'm in love with it. Isn't it the cutest? I've never really decorated for Valentine's Day before, but having just this pretty little bunting hanging up makes me want to deck out the entire house in pink, red, and white.

Happy February, friends! :)
